About Chuks

Chuks Onyebuchi is the Chief Executive Officer of Union Systems Limited (USL), an Information Technology Company that provides financial software solutions and professional services to banks.

With over 25 years’ experience in the information technology industry, he has had an accomplished career developing and delivering software solutions to major banks in Africa.

Under his leadership, Union Systems introduced Trade-X, a home-grown trade finance software application that solves all the peculiar problems faced in Nigerian trade finance operations. That was followed up with the launch of Optimus, the first multi-bank trade finance corporate portal in the region that empowers corporates to initiate and manage their trade transactions from anywhere in the world. Union Systems have recently released Kachasi an end-to-end trade finance Software, Egora a treasury management software and Sakobia a swift messaging system. These products are currently running in several banks in Nigeria.

Chuks has extensive experience developing the African market for major international banking software companies.

He helped Misys (now Finastra) to close the biggest deal in their history worth over $38 million US dollars (a transformational project for one of the tier 1 banks) in Nigeria among several other deals.

Prior to Union Systems, He worked at former Computer System Associates (CSA) now Neptune Software Group where he led the team that designed and developed SMARTBANK core banking system. He also supervised the implementation of SMARTBANK in seven banks in Nigeria

Chuks was involved in the pioneering effort of the first payment system in Nigeria, the ValuCard and ESCA payment schemes. He was responsible for the African operation of CardBASE Technologies, Dublin. At CardBASE Technologies, he managed the implementation of the ValuCard Payment system and subsequently provided ongoing support to over forty-three banks in the ValuCard scheme.

He is a member of the National Software Think Tank, a convergence of the ICT Expert Group set up by the National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP) and the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) to present a 5-year strategic plan to reposition the Nigeria Software Ecosystem.

He was recently elected First Vice President of the Institute of Software Practitioners of Nigeria (ISPON). He is a fellow of the Nigeria Computer Society(FNCS), a fellow of the British Computer Society(FBCS) and a fellow of the Institute of Information management (FIIM). He was awarded the Engr Simeon Agu Prize for Best Software Entrepreneur of the Year 2019.

He holds a degree in Computer Science from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, an MBA from ESUT Business School Enugu and has attended many courses and seminars locally and internationally.
